Overview

If you told us the Clueless sequel series was finally happening, it would have earned you an, ‘Ugh, as if!’ But Paramount+ has officially greenlit the project, and Alicia Silverstone is returning as Cher.

On July 30, 2026, Paramount+ announced that it greenlit a sequel series to the classic 90s teen comedy. Alicia Silverstone is reprising her iconic role as Cher Horowitz, and get this — she’s also executive producer for the show, alongside the original movie’s writer and director, Amy Heckerling.

The series starts 30 years after the 1995 film, following Cher as she navigates her roles as a successful business owner and a mom to a teenage daughter. As told by the show’s logline, she soon discovers that parenting a teen “makes her feel ‘clueless’ all over again.”

Production is set to begin in Los Angeles in 2027, with CBS Studios handling production. Creative partners Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage (The OC, Chuck, Gossip Girl), along with Jordan Weiss (Dollface, Freakier Friday) and Robert Lawrence, will write and executive produce.

"Clueless is coming home," Jane Wiseman, Head of Originals for Paramount+, said in a statement. "Thirty-one years ago, Alicia Silverstone's Cher Horowitz captivated audiences with her signature chic style, sharp wit and relentless optimism, helping make Clueless a box office hit and instant pop culture classic. We're especially proud to be filming this much-anticipated series in Los Angeles, honoring its starring role in the original film while investing in the city’s exceptional talent and crews.”

This is welcome news after Peacock, which was originally developing the sequel series, canceled the show in April 2026 — one year after first announcing it. However, due to strong interest surrounding the project, it was predicted that another studio would snap it up fast… and this turned out to be true.

Silverstone spoke about the project in April 2025 after news of the sequel series was first revealed, confirming that this version of Cher is more mature and thoughtful than her teenage self.

“I can't wait to step back into Cher's skin and her fancy designer shoes that will be gently used. Of course, duh. Because she's evolved; this is 2025. She's not wearing the new stuff. Unless it's, you know, sustainable or vegan. I mean, we'll have to see how far we can go with that. But let's see,” she said on Entertainment Tonight.

The Clueless sequel series has had quite a journey up ‘til now. CBS TV Studios had actually planned a series surrounding Stacy Dash’s character, Dionne Davenport, in 2020, but it got canceled before it could get off the ground after Peacock took over the project.
