Extended Cut of Backrooms Hits Theaters Soon With Additional 15 Minutes of 'Theatrically Exclusive' Footage After the Credits
About
Overview
Backrooms is getting an extended cut very soon, and it's coming to theaters. Although it has yet to be formally announced by director Kane Parsons or A24 itself, multiple theater chains like AMC Theatres have begun posting listings for a new version of the Backrooms movie, titled Backrooms: Everything Must Go Edition. The film promises an additional 15 minutes of footage, which may not be released on home video. The description notes that the footage is "theatrically exclusive" and will be inserted after the credits, suggesting the film's original structure remains unchanged. The new cut will be released in theaters on July 3. It's unclear if the new footage will include deleted scenes, behind-the-scenes extras, or something else entirely, but if you enjoyed Backrooms, this will likely come as a fun surprise. This isn't the first time a film has done this, though it often happens as a way to boost a movie's box office earnings. A24 may be trying to aggressively compete with Obsession's impressive box office run. In the past, films like Spider-Man: No Way Home and Avengers: Endgame were re-released with additional footage, though the consensus was that these weren't "better" versions of the original movie. Unlike a director's cut, which can dramatically improve a movie, these were deleted scenes that were removed for a good reason. Avengers: Endgame is being re-released once again later this year with even more new footage, which will directly tie in with Avengers: Doomsday. As for Backrooms, director Kane Parsons is reportedly eyeing a sequel for Backrooms and potentially an adaptation of Valve's puzzle game, Portal. It remains to be seen what his next project will be, but Parsons will be an in-demand director for the foreseeable future. Cade Onder is a freelancer for IGN's news team.
