Jumanji: Open World Trailer Reveals One Last Roll of the Dice for Dwayne Johnson and His Video Game Friends — and After Black Adam and Moana Flopped, Will It Provide The Rock With a Much-Needed Hit?
About
Overview
Sony has released our best look yet at Jumanji: Open World, the third and final entry in the franchise's Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson-starring era. A fresh trailer reveals a group of new characters — plus the returning Danny DeVito — encountering the trilogy's now-familiar quartet of video game avatars, who have escaped out into the real world. But they're not the only ones to have emerged from within Jumanji — as a familiar-looking parade of wild animals is also rampaging around. As more threats pour out into reality, the new characters choose to enter Jumanji once more, leading to the Rock, Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan and Jack Black taking on their personalities. Here's that trailer: One. Last. Game. Jumanji: Open World is due to arrive in theaters this Christmas, literally on December 25, following a slight delay to push its arrival further away from Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part 3 the month before — which feels like a good decision. It's been some time since the last Jumanji film debuted back in 2019, with this sequel delayed by the Covid pandemic and also director Jake Kasdan's work on Red One, another film starring Dwayne Johnson released around Christmas (no, I don't remember it either). The intervening years have proved to be something of a rough period for The Rock, whose recent list of films include box office flops such as Red One, this year's live-action Moana and 2022's DC failure Black Adam. Johnson also walked away empty-handed from his bid to reinvent himself as a serious actor and win an Oscar with last year's The Smashing Machine. And, most tellingly, his Fortnite character lost a recent popularity contest to be beaten by the season's baddie. Whatever happens, Sony has said this is the final Jumanji film for the time being, despite its previous two entries doing the numbers at the box office. Here's hoping it's a good one.
