Spider-Man: Brand New Day Looks Set for an Enormous Opening Weekend at the Box Office, but Will It Beat Avengers: Endgame?

Spider-Man: Brand New Day is swinging towards box office success having secured the biggest previews haul in North American movie history.

The Marvel movie made $72 million in previews, which includes Wednesday early access screenings, Variety reported. That puts Tom Holland’s latest star turn as Spider-Man ahead of the previous record holder, 2019’s Avengers: Endgame, which made $60 million in Thursday previews.

However, this doesn’t mean Spider-Man is on course to beat Avengers: Endgame’s record-breaking opening weekend, either domestically or globally. It doesn’t necessarily mean Brand New Day will beat the opening weekend the last Spider-Man movie, No Way Home, managed in December 2021.

Avengers: Endgame’s opening weekend brought in a massive $357 million in North America, and an eye-watering $1.2 billion globally. According to Variety, Sony is suggesting a domestic start of $190-$195 million for Brand New Day, and an international opening weekend of $275-$300 million. So, Brand New Day may end up behind No Way Home’s $260 million North American start and $587 million global opening weekend, which is the third best in history.

Either way, Brand New Day is an obvious hit and an almost guaranteed billion dollar hit for both Sony and Marvel Studios. Spider-Man appears immune to the superhero fatigue that has plagued other MCU films in recent years, and Tom Holland and Zendaya’s pull with young audiences shows no sign of fading.

The MCU continues with this December’s Avengers: Doomsday, which some believe will feature Spider-Man following the events of Brand New Day. Others, though, think Spider-Man may turn up in next year’s Avengers: Secret Wars instead. We try to make sense of the Spider-Man: Brand New Day's post credits scene here.
