Steven Spielberg's Hook: 35th Anniversary 4K Steelbook Is Up for Preorder

Hook, Steven Spielberg’s 1991 movie about a grown-up Peter Pan, is officially 35 years old. To celebrate the milestone, Sony is releasing a new 4K steelbook version. It’s up for preorder now (see it at Amazon) for $39.99, with a release date of November 17.

It comes in a fetching case adorned with the same cover art as the 1992 VHS edition. It also has two all-new bonus features that are presented in full 4K. So far it's only up at Amazon, but I'll add more retailers as the listings go live. Read on for the details.

This movie is exceptionally star-studded. It has Robin Williams as Peter Pan, of course. It has Julia Roberts as Tinkerbell, as well as Dustin Hoffman as an absolutely delightful Captain Hook. Dame Maggie Smith plays an elderly Wendy Moira Angela Darling, and Bob Hoskins absolutely kills it as Smee (he would go on play Mario in Super Mario Bros. just two years later). You can’t beat a cast like that.

I’m well aware that Hook has its detractors. But it’s clear (to this elder Millennial, anyway) that the movie’s biggest critics weren’t its target audience when it came out. I adored this movie as a kid, and I’ve shown it to my own kids, who also enjoyed it decades later.

What's so great about it? It has Robin Williams at the height of his powers, along with the rest of the cast mentioned above, including Julia Roberts right when she’s launching her mega-star career. Plus, it has a colorful food fight, a room full of clocks, and a dog barking the word “Hook.” What’s not to love?
