Supergirl Now Available to Watch Online After Box Office Struggles
About
Overview
Supergirl is now available to rent or purchase digitally from PVOD platforms like Prime Video. The move to digital was announced late last week and comes almost exactly one month after the DCU movie’s initial release in theaters. At the time of writing, Supergirl has grossed just over $124 million globally on an estimated budget of $170 million. Unfortunately, that makes it one of the lowest-grossing DC Comics adaptations to date. If you're one of the seemingly many people who didn't make it out to theater for this one, here’s everything we know about Supergirl releasing on digital, streaming, and DVD so you can watch it at home. Supergirl is now available to rent for $19.99 or purchase digitally for $24.99. Digital extras, including behind-the-scenes featurettes, are only available if you go for the full purchase. Prime Video is offering a bundle of both Supergirl and Superman for $29.99. The film is also getting a home video release in a number of different formats, including a 4K steelbook. Those are all up for preorder with a release date of September 8. Supergirl has struggled at the box office since its opening weekend, when it grossed just over $68 million. The film saw a massive 74% drop in attendance during its second weekend in theaters, and now sits well below the top 10 highest-grossing movies of the year. DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran commented on the box office challenges in an interview with The New York Times: "While Supergirl didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in." Unfortunately, the movie hasn’t fared much better in terms of critical reception, currently sitting at a 53% Critics Score on Rotten Tomatoes. Clint Gage gave the movie a 6/10 in his review for IGN, describing it as a “shuffling, few-steps-forward, few-steps-back kind of slog that never really finds a rhythm.” However, he still has plenty of praise for Milly Alcock’s performance in the titular role, with most criticism honing in on some interesting creative decisions in the movie’s final act. The blame certainly doesn’t seem to be on the DC element of the movie, as Supergirl joins a growing list of quote ‘disappointing’ 2026 box office runs for otherwise massive live action franchise adaptations. Other recent examples include Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu and Amazon’s Masters of the Universe. In terms of what's next for James Gunn’s new DC Studios, Lanterns is premiering on HBO Max in just a few weeks. We don’t know exactly when we’ll see Supergirl herself again, but there’s a strong chance she plays some role in next year’s Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow. On the comic side of things, DC just revealed a spread of new Next Level titles at San Diego Comic-Con. Supergirl will eventually be streaming on HBO Max, the home of all things DC. Superman came to the Warner Bros.-owned streaming service around 70 days after its theatrical release, lining up with its DVD release at the time. Assuming Supergirl follows a similar timeline, it will be available to subscribers by early September, if not sooner given the expedited shift to digital. Blythe (she/her) is an Audience Development Coordinator at IGN who, when she isn't following streaming news, spends way too much time in character customization screens and tracking down collectibles. ![]()
