The First LEGO Mario Minifigure Sets Are Up for Preorder

LEGO is gearing up to release a number of Super Mario sets that are unlike all previous Mario sets. These upcoming sets are minifigure-scale and feature minifigures of Mario and the Mushroom Kingdom gang. They're set to release January 1, but a number of them have just gone up for preorder at Amazon and Target. Let’s take a look.

The new minifigures include Mario (plus beach and fire Mario), Luigi (plus fire Luigi), Toad, Yoshi, Princess Peach, and even a Koopa Troopa. The sets come with plenty of enemies and recognizable items, like Goombas, POW blocks, Question blocks, racing Karts, banana peels, green and red shells, and more.

As usual, the sets have special interactive features. For instance, the $9.99 Mario’s Pipe Jump set has a lever that, when Mario jumps on it, sends the Goomba flying. The Bowser’s Castle set has a working drawbridge, trapdoors, and a lava ball launcher.

Previous Mario LEGO sets have all come in one of two flavors. One was LEGO sets for adults that were aimed at the 18+ age demographic, mostly honing in on nostalgia for things like the Game Boy, the NES console or Super Mario World’s Mario-riding-Yoshi sprite. I love those sets and hope they keep on coming. The other type of Mario set were the ones aimed at kids, with play functionality built in. I didn’t love those sets nearly as much.

I haven't gotten a close-up look at them yet, but I think this new batch of Mario minifigure-based LEGO sets strikes the perfect balance.
