The Sopranos Is Finally Getting a 4K Remaster With a New Limited-Edition Set Releasing This Year
About
Overview
One of the greatest shows of all time is finally getting a 4K remaster. The Sopranos, which ran for six seasons from 1999 to 2007, is getting a new limited-edition release in full 4K Ultra HD. The set contains all 86 glorious episodes of the series alongside a hefty spread of bonus features across 28 (!!) discs. The full 4K set will be released on December 8 of this year and is currently up for preorder at Gruv for $149.99. At the time of writing, it’s unclear whether HBO will release any additional ‘standard’ editions or whether a version of the 4K remaster will also be making its way to HBO Max. The Gruv listing notably contains an ‘Artwork may be subject to change’ caveat, but we can at least glean that the 28 discs will be packaged in a hardcover lay-flat book which features ‘the legendary cast in vibrant full-color spreads.’ Those discs are then packaged in a good ol’ box, which tentatively features a dramatic still of Tony shrouded in shadows. The limited-edition set is currently available to preorder directly from Gruv, an online storefront owned by Universal and Warner Bros. We’re keeping an eye out for listings at any other retailers. Bonus features, including both existing special features from previous DVD releases as well as a new featurette, are collected on two separate discs: It’s unclear whether the new 4K remaster will also make its way to HBO Max. For reference, HBO Max is one of the few services that offers a separate ‘Premium’ plan specifically for 4K streaming. The service recently unveiled a new 4K remaster of a series many consider a Sopranos successor, Mad Men, though that remaster may have included some goofs. In any case, streaming something in 4K largely depends on your own set-up, and even then is hard to compare to the quality of what you can get on disc. If you aren’t pressed about getting that 4K UHD quality, the standard DVD version of the full HBO series is currently $54.96. That price drops down to $41.49 if you’re a Prime member, courtesy of some Prime Day deals.
